The trap was set

Kevin was the second child to C. and T.  C. knew that my brother wanted out of the marriage after her first son, so she decided to (in essence) "trap" my brother in the loveless marriage by letting herself get pregnant again.  Now, I honestly do not think Kevin was ever told of this, at least I hope not, but I can tell you he wasn't told of it by myself or my parents.  We loved both boys with all of our hearts, but at times it was questionable of the mother.  The first words out of her mouth when the older brother was born was "give him to T's mom."

    C. and T. never wanted their children with them, at every moment that they could, they would dump them off on my mom.  My mother would be dog tired from working her shift at the nursing home - as she would be walking out, there C. would be in the entrance way with both boys in their car seats waiting for Nana.  Mom never got rest.

Right away we noticed a severe lack of parenting skills with the parents.  We would find both boys in extremely filthy diapers, eating out of bottles that were soured. They had had these children pretty young, but that was no excuse.  Then T tried his hardest to stay away from C as the marriage started disintegrating, which was not a reason to let your children suffer.  He should have taken better care of the kids.  At one point, Kevin was diagnosed with some sort of reflux - he had to be held upright directly after a bottle, or he would vomit everywhere.  Instead of making sure their baby was ok, they packed up and took a vacation to Georgia.  They were there a week, then brought the boys to my mother.

I remember I was in high school at the time - still living at home - and in my bedroom.  I knew mom was in the kitchen on the floor changing Kevin's diaper.  I heard a sharp intake of breath and she screamed "Sis, I need you to watch Austin! I'm taking Kevin to Dr. Jenkins!!" When I asked her what was wrong, I could hear her crying.

Kevin was so dehydrated, he looked like someone had taken an ice cream scoop to his soft spot and just scooped it out.  His skin was just hanging on his bones, like he was a literal bag of bones.  He looked like a child sized mummy.  Mom took him to our personal doctor (an old, retired military doctor), who took just one look at Kevin and said, "If you want this baby to live, you'll take him to the emergency room right now."
